Built with Empty Fists: The Rise and Circulation of Black Power Martial Artistry During The Cold War

My dissertation explores the history of unarmed self-defense and martial arts in Black community organizing between 1955 and 1980. As such, it intervenes in Black Power studies, Afro-Asian studies, and gender history. Using a Black feminist approach to social movement analysis, it challenges preconceived notions about Black Power athleticism, aesthetics, gender roles, and self-defense. Utilizing oral histories and archival research, my dissertation alters current understandings of Black martial artistry. This study disproves the narrative that 1970s kung fu films sparked African American interest in martial artistry, and from there trickled into Black Power organizations. It analyzes how U.S. Cold War occupation of Okinawa and similar locales across East Asia facilitated the study of arts like karate by creating possibilities for interracial contact, both domestically and abroad. While the roots of African-American practices of East Asian martial artistry can be traced to U.S. militarism, I argue that martial arts practice contributed to the development of holistic, community engagement practices rooted in political, spiritual, and physical well-being within Black communities. I explore martial arts practice in three organizational case studies in order to attend to differences in time-period, approach, and gender practices. Nationwide, the Nation of Islam empowered men and women to feel safe with gendered ideas about who should practice unarmed, community defense. The Congress of African People practiced karate to provide physical protection to black community leaders and politicians running for elected office and enrich Pan-Africanism and Black Arts cultural practice in New York and New Jersey. Lastly, the Black Panther Party taught tae kwon do as part of a Third World, gender-inclusive education, catering to the body and soul of Oakland youth. The dissertation ends by examining how these organizations influenced the representations of male and female martial artists in Blaxploitation films. My intersectional lens centers a critical approach to Black nationalist masculinism and situates how developments in Black women's leadership impact the gender norms and pedagogy of combat sports and self-defense. It revises assumptions that Black manhood and womanhood remained static and that Black Power activists did not develop nuanced approaches to body politics and self-determination.PHDAmerican CultureUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. Virtual reality and three-dimensional modelling technologies are mainly used in industry in many aspects. The automotive industry is considered as the initial group that uses virtual reality technologies. However, without adopting advanced technology, the automotive industry cannot compete with its global competition. In this study, six automotive companies in Malaysia were selected as case study to verify the virtual reality adoption capability. A total number of 240 questionnaires were distributed among the six car companies in Malaysia and 153 people responded to the questionnaires. For analysing, Pearson chi-square test was conducted followed by frequency analysis on the respondents’ answers. The analysis showed that 54% of industry respondents have stated that existing technology is not enough while 83.7% of them showed tendency towards adoption and improvement with new technology in which virtual reality was found as the best option that can be adopted to different sections of automotive manufacturing industry. The results also revealed that manufacturing, designing, ‘planning and research’ and engineering departments are the appropriate areas for implementing virtual reality technology

On Multi-Armed Bandit Designs for Dose-Finding Clinical Trials

We study the problem of finding the optimal dosage in early stage clinical trials through the multi-armed bandit lens. We advocate the use of the Thompson Sampling principle, a flexible algorithm that can accommodate different types of monotonicity assumptions on the toxicity and efficacy of the doses. For the simplest version of Thompson Sampling, based on a uniform prior distribution for each dose, we provide finite-time upper bounds on the number of sub-optimal dose selections, which is unprecedented for dose-finding algorithms. Through a large simulation study, we then show that variants of Thompson Sampling based on more sophisticated prior distributions outperform state-of-the-art dose identification algorithms in different types of dose-finding studies that occur in phase I or phase I/II trials

The aim of the following research is to provide a brief insight into employee loyalty towards their organization and its effects on working conditions, working environment, and bonus and incentives. As employees are considered to be key strategic assets of every organization so it is essential for the organization to study the factors which produce a profound effect on loyalty. Loyalty is said to be a unique composition of employee attributes depicting a higher quality which is difficult to find significantly affecting the prevailing organization succession. For the progression of the research findings, the precedent research followed a T-test, F-test, ANOVA, multiple regressions, Factor analysis, Durbin Watson, correlation as the methodology. The following methodology aid inevaluating the crucial elements of the organization significantly affecting the employee loyalty. Moreover, in the research working condition, working environment and bonus and incentives served as the dependent variable, while employee loyalty as the independent variable. The researcher has employed the calculation of the observation from self-design 100 questionnaires which were filled by Muslim commercial bank employees in all over Karachi, all result have significant impact at 5% alpha.  On the basis of data, it can be concluded that the determinants of the independent variable of the current dissertation have a significant impact on employee loyalty. Moreover, all of the three independent variables have been accepted. Therefore, it is feasible to suggest that the organization should focus on the prevailing variables for enhancing the performance of the organization and driving the optimal outcome for securing the leading position in the industry

    Get PDF
This paper aims to objectively compare the use of mental health apps between the pre-COVID-19 and during COVID-19 periods and to study differences amongst the users of these apps based on age and gender. The study utilizes a dataset collected through a smartphone app that objectively records the users\u27 sessions. The dataset was analyzed to identify users of mental health apps (38 users of mental health apps pre-COVID-19 and 81 users during COVID-19) and to calculate the following usage metrics; the daily average use time, the average session time, the average number of launches, and the number of usage days. The mental health apps were classified into two categories: guidance-based and tracking-based apps. The results include the increased number of users of mental health apps during the COVID-19 period as compared to pre-COVID-19. Adults (aged 24 and above), compared to emerging adults (aged 15-24 years), were found to have a higher usage of overall mental health apps and guidance-based mental health apps. Furthermore, during the COVID-19 pandemic, males were found to be more likely to launch overall mental health apps and guidance-based mental health apps compared to females. The findings from this paper suggest that despite the increased usage of mental health apps amongst males and adults, user engagement with mental health apps remained minimal. This suggests the need for these apps to work towards improved user engagement and retention

Background & Objectives: Residents spend much of their time at the hospitals to earn their required educational skills and although they act as a kind of human resource in the hospital, they increase hospital costs. The present study was designed to calculate the share of educational costs of different medical residents in hospitals. Methods: In this descriptive and applied study performed in one of the hospitals affiliated to Iran University of Medical Sciences, the hospital cost items of education of residents in different medical fields during the academic year of 2017-2018 were identified by use of two scenarios. Results: In short, mean educational cost of one resident in the studied academic year was about 5357basedonthefirstscenarioandabout5404 based on the first scenario and about 5404 according to the second scenario. Based on both scenarios, salaries paid to residents accounted for more than 50% of the costs followed by the cost of consumed materials by residents. Forensic Medicine and Anesthesiology residency programs had respectively the lowest and highest share of costs in both scenarios. Conclusion: The cost of training in the hospital is different among residency fields based on the required tests and errors in each field. But, in order to save hospital costs, the culture of optimal use of materials as well as medical equipment should be taught to residents.
